Spark plug is an electrical device that situated at the top/side of the cylinder head of internal combustion petrol engines.


And its main function is to ignites compressed air fuel mixture by means of providing an electric spark.


To generate Sparks a spark plug have an insulated electrode which is connected  to an ignition coil or magneto circuit or any other circuit.


Spark plugs the outer side is connected with this ignition coil's wire called electrode and this spark plug have  a grounded terminal on the base, and between in these electrodes/terminals have some space.


And we know that---
Internal combustion engines can be classified into two types

Spark-ignition engines-


which require spark plugs to begin combustion, and




compression-ignition engines (diesel engines)


In this first we compress the air and then inject fuel into the compressed air mixture where it auto-ignites or insome condition we use glow plug to heat up the compressed air.  



use glow plugs to improve cold start characteristics.








Spark plug working

Spark plug is a simple device,  but have very important function with a couple of different but critical jobs. First and foremost, it creates (literally) an artificial bolt of lightning within the combustion chamber (cylinder head) of the engine. The electrical energy (voltage) it transmits is extremely high in order to create a spark and to “light the fire” within the controlled chaos of the combustion chamber. 

Here, the voltage at the spark plug can be anywhere from 20,000 to more than 100,000 voltage.

Spark plug construction

Spark plug is very common in but it's construction is not common.
A spark plug consist many parts to generate the spark to ignite air fuel mixture.

And in this part of Blog we will provide detail information about it's parts and about it's construction, and how they work.
In this part you will easily understand about it's all parts and there's operators.

Ribs

Rib provides Insulated protection against any secondary voltage or crossfire are arises, and also help to improve the gripping of the  spark plug against the plug body.


The insulator body is made from ceramic named aluminum oxide.


And this part (spark plug) is manufactured with high pressure and dry moulding after applying high-pressure, dry molding,  the insulator is molded, it is kiln-fired to a set temperature that extends the melting temperature of steel. 

This process decreases the chance of failure against the  various circumstances, and increase  the spark plug exceptional dielectric strength, high thermal conductivity and excellent resistance to shock.




Insulator

Insulator is manufactured with high pressure and dry moulding after applying high-pressure, dry molding,  the insulator is molded, it is kiln-fired to a set temperature that extends the melting temperature of steel. This process decreases the chance of failure against the  various circumstances, and increase  the spark plug exceptional dielectric strength, high thermal conductivity and excellent resistance to shock.


The pointer shows the spark plug insulator. As mentioned above image, this is made with aluminum oxide ceramic. The outer surface is ribbed to provide grip for the spark plug boot and to simultaneously add protection  from crossfire.






Hex

The hexagon design make easy to make contact point with a socket wrench.
The hex size is basically same for all in spark plug who manufacture it.
And this is generally related to the spark plug thread size.






Shell

The is made of steel.
Shell is fabricated  using a special cold extrusion process to achieve close tolerances.





Plating: The shell is almost always plated.

This enhances the durability and provides for rust and corrosion resistance of shell.The is made of steel.

The hexagon designed at the top of the shell allows you to use a socket wrench to install or remove the spark plug.






Gasket

some spark plugs are uses gaskets while other  are gasketless. The gasket used on spark plugs is made of folded steel and this gasket  provides a smooth surface for sealing.


Gasketless spark plugs use  tapered design to seal the area with a close tolerance.








Threads

Threads are provided on a spark plug to tighten or to open the spark plug from it's place.


Spark plug threads are normally rolled, not cut.






Ground electrode

Electrode are very essential part of any spark plug
Because of this a spark plug generate Sparks.


In the spark plug the ground electrode is made of nickel alloy steel.
But there is much number of electrode shape and configuration available.
Some properties the ground electrode must be have like:-

Resistant to both spark erosion and chemical erosion, both under massive temperature extremes.




Center electrode: There is two type of electrodes are used

Ground electrode
Center  electrode
And center electrode are manufactured with  nikle's alloy
Center electrodes must have resistant capacity to both spark erosion and chemical corrosion.




Spark park electrode gap

This gap is between the ground electrode and center electrode between these gap the spark is generated when high voltage is applied.


And this gap are generally setup with a set standerd parameter by the manufacturer company.





Insulator nose
Main function of the Insulator nose is to prevent the internal parts from the temperature generated by combustion of fuel, 
Insulator nose must be capable of shedding carbon, oil and fuel deposits at low speeds. At higher engine speeds, the insulator nose is generally cooled so that temperatures and electrode corrosion are reduced.
