Role of steering system in a car:-

When you rotate the steering wheel, the car responds. But how does this steering system in cars give you a smooth feel do you know?
A group of parts called the steering system allows the movement of the steering wheel and the steering shaft to move the wheels left and right – although car wheels don’t turn at that angle

In this article we discuss about rack & pinion type steering system
Rack and pinion steering system:-




In most of cars, small trucks and in SUVs today, there is a rack and pinion steering system. This converts the rotational motion of the steering wheel into the rectilinear motion and that's turns the wheels and guides your path.
The system have a circular gear (the steering pinion) which  teeth mashed on a bar (the rack).
and transforms  rotations of the steering wheel into, accurate turns of the wheels, giving a direct feel to the steering










PARTS OF STEERING SYSTEM

Steering wheel

∆ Enable the driver to control the direction of vehicle.
∆ Circular in shape and mounted on the steering column.
Horn pad and airbags ari situated on the steering wheel.



Steering column

Steering column is a mechnical link between steering wheel and steering gear box.
∆ Steering column is the type of telescopic or tilt type.

Steering column and universal joint


Universal joint

Perpose of universal joint is to transmit rotary motion to another which is attached in any angle
It joint the steering column and rack& pinion




Steering gear box

∆ Steering gear box is a device which converts the rotary motion of steering wheel into straight line motion of the linkage.
Type of steering gear box is:
• Rack and pinion type
• Recirculating ball type

∆ The hydraulic power steering system uses a pump to provide assistance.
∆ Vane type pump is used.
Driven by crankshaft by belt and pully.
Amount of pressure delivered by pump depends on the engine speed.




Reservoir

Fluid reservoir stores the steering fluid witch is needed for the power steering operation.




Tie rods

Tie the steering knuckle to the centre track rod/steering rack and adjuster adjusts the toe in/out




Damper coupling

∆ To prevent the shocks being transmitted from the wheel rod to Steering wheel.
It is fitted between steering wheel and steering gear box.
